How to Boil Eggs So They Peel Easily Every Time
There's nothing more frustrating than trying to peel a boiled egg and having the shell stick to the egg white. But with these simple tips, you'll be able to boil eggs that peel perfectly every time.
Step 1: Use Older Eggs
This is the most important tip! Eggs that are 1-2 weeks old peel much easier than fresh eggs. As eggs age, the membrane inside the shell separates from the egg white, making them easier to peel.
Step 2: Bring the Water to a Boil First
Don't put the eggs in cold water and then bring it to a boil. Instead, bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil first.
Step 3: Add the Eggs Carefully
Gently lower the eggs into the boiling water using a slotted spoon. This will prevent the eggs from cracking.
Step 4: Boil for the Right Amount of Time
For perfect hard-boiled eggs, boil them for exactly 9 minutes. For soft-boiled eggs, boil for 6 minutes.
Step 5: Shock the Eggs in Ice Water
As soon as the eggs are done boiling, transfer them immediately to a bowl of ice water. Let them sit for at least 5 minutes.
This stops the cooking process and causes the egg white to contract, separating it from the shell.
Step 6: Peel the Eggs
Tap the egg gently on a hard surface to crack the shell all over. Then roll the egg between your hands to loosen the shell. Start peeling from the wider end of the egg, where there's an air pocket.
Pro Tips
- Add a teaspoon of salt or vinegar to the boiling water - this helps the egg white coagulate if the egg cracks
- Peel the eggs under running water - this helps the shell come off more easily
- If you're using fresh eggs, add a little baking soda to the water to make them easier to peel
