How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies in the House (Overnight)

Fruit flies are the most annoying pests ever. They seem to appear out of nowhere and multiply like crazy. I had a terrible fruit fly infestation last summer, and I tried every trap I could find. In this guide, I'll show you the only fruit fly trap that actually works and gets rid of them overnight.

The Best Fruit Fly Trap

This trap is so simple to make, and it works better than any store-bought trap I've tried.

  1. Take a small jar or cup.
  2. Pour a little bit of apple cider vinegar into the jar.
  3. Add a drop of dish soap.
  4. Cover the jar with plastic wrap and secure it with a rubber band.
  5. Poke a few small holes in the plastic wrap with a toothpick.

Place the trap near where you see the most fruit flies. The fruit flies will be attracted to the apple cider vinegar, fly into the jar, and get stuck.

How to Prevent Fruit Flies From Coming Back

  • Don't leave ripe fruit out on the counter
  • Take the trash out regularly
  • Clean up spills immediately
  • Don't leave dirty dishes in the sink

What Doesn't Work

I tried using red wine, beer, and banana peels as bait, and they didn't work nearly as well as apple cider vinegar. The dish soap is also very important – it breaks the surface tension of the vinegar, so the fruit flies sink and drown.
