How to Clean a Dishwasher (Yes, It Needs to Be Cleaned)
Most people don't realize that dishwashers need to be cleaned regularly. Over time, food particles, grease, and mineral deposits build up inside your dishwasher, which can make it smell bad and not clean your dishes properly. I clean my dishwasher once a month, and it works like new.
What You'll Need
- White vinegar
- Baking soda
- A dishwasher-safe bowl
Step-by-Step Guide
- Remove the bottom rack from the dishwasher and clean out any food particles from the drain.
- Put 1 cup of white vinegar in the dishwasher-safe bowl and place it on the top rack of the dishwasher.
- Run the dishwasher on the hottest cycle.
- Once the cycle is finished, sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher.
- Run another short hot cycle.
How to Clean the Dishwasher Filter
Most dishwashers have a filter that catches food particles. You should clean the filter once a month. Just remove the filter, rinse it under warm water, and put it back in.
Pro Tip
To keep your dishwasher clean longer, scrape off food from your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. Don't pre-rinse them, though – that actually wastes water and makes the dishwasher work less effectively.
