How to Soften Butter Quickly (Without Melting It)
Nothing ruins a baking recipe faster than hard butter. I can't tell you how many times I've forgotten to take butter out of the fridge before baking. I tried every method to soften butter quickly, and some of them melted the butter completely, which ruined my cookies. In this guide, I'll show you the best ways to soften butter quickly without melting it.
Method 1: The Grating Method (Fastest)
This method softens butter in 5 minutes, and it's perfect for baking.
- Take the cold butter out of the fridge and unwrap it.
- Use the large holes on a box grater to grate the butter.
- Let the grated butter sit at room temperature for 5 minutes.
The grated butter has a lot more surface area, so it softens really fast without melting.
Method 2: The Rolling Pin Method
If you don't want to grate your butter, this method works great too.
- Put the cold butter between two sheets of parchment paper.
- Use a rolling pin to pound the butter flat, about 1/4 inch thick.
- Let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
What to Avoid
Never microwave butter to soften it. It will melt the butter unevenly, and melted butter will ruin most baking recipes. Even if it looks solid, the butter may have partially melted, which will change the texture of your baked goods.
