How to Open a Jar That's Stuck (7 Methods That Actually Work)
We've all been there: you're trying to open a jar of pickles or pasta sauce, and the lid is stuck so tight you can't get it open. I've tried every trick in the book to open stuck jars, and some of them work every single time. In this guide, I'll show you the easiest methods to open a jar that's stuck, no special tools required.
Method 1: The Hot Water Method (Works Every Time)
This is my go-to method for stuck jars. It works 99% of the time, and it's so simple.
- Fill a bowl with hot (not boiling) water.
- Turn the jar upside down and submerge the lid in the hot water for 30 seconds.
- Dry the jar with a towel, then twist the lid open.
The hot water causes the metal lid to expand, which breaks the seal.
Method 2: The Rubber Glove Method
If the lid is just slippery, this method works great.
- Put on a rubber dish glove.
- Grip the lid tightly with the glove and twist it open.
The rubber gives you much more grip than your bare hands.
Method 3: The Tap Method
This method breaks the seal on the jar with a little bit of force.
- Hold the jar at a 45-degree angle.
- Tap the edge of the lid firmly on the edge of a counter a few times.
- Twist the lid open.
Pro Tip
Always twist the lid to the left. Remember: "lefty loosey, righty tighty".
