How to Keep Flowers Fresh Longer (I Tested 4 Methods)
I love having fresh flowers in my house, but they always wilt and die after just a few days. I tested 4 different methods to keep flowers fresh longer, and one method made my flowers last for 2 full weeks. In this guide, I'll show you exactly how to do it.
The Best Method (Lasts 2 Weeks)
This method kept my flowers fresh and beautiful for 14 days. It's so simple, and it uses items you already have at home.
- As soon as you get the flowers, cut 1 inch off the stems at a 45-degree angle. Use a sharp pair of scissors or garden shears.
- Remove all the leaves that will be below the water line in the vase. Leaves in the water will grow bacteria and make the flowers die faster.
- Fill a clean vase with lukewarm water.
- Add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and 1 tablespoon of sugar to the water. Stir to dissolve.
- Put the flowers in the vase.
- Change the water every 2 days, and re-cut the stems each time.
The sugar feeds the flowers, and the vinegar kills bacteria in the water.
Pro Tips
- Keep your flowers away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and fruit. Fruit releases ethylene gas, which makes flowers wilt faster.
- Remove any wilted flowers or petals as soon as you see them. They can cause the other flowers to die faster.
- Use a clean vase. Bacteria in a dirty vase will make your flowers die quickly.
Methods That Did NOT Work
I tried all of these methods, and they didn't work any better than plain water: - Adding a penny to the water - Adding aspirin to the water - Adding vodka to the water
