How to Keep Avocados from Turning Brown (I Tested 4 Methods)
Nothing is more frustrating than cutting open a perfect avocado, using half of it, and coming back the next day to find it brown and mushy. I used to throw away so many avocados until I tested every method I could find to keep them fresh. In this guide, I'll show you the only method that actually works to keep avocados from turning brown for up to 3 days.
The Only Method That Actually Works
This method kept my avocado fresh and green for 3 full days in the fridge. It's so simple, and it only uses one ingredient you already have at home.
- Leave the pit in the half of the avocado you're not using.
- Squeeze a thin layer of fresh lemon juice over all the exposed flesh of the avocado.
- Wrap the avocado tightly in plastic wrap, making sure there's no air touching the flesh.
- Store it in the fridge.
Methods That Did NOT Work
I tried all of these methods, and they either didn't work or made the avocado taste weird: - Storing the avocado with an onion - Putting the avocado in a container with water - Brushing the avocado with olive oil - Storing it in an airtight container with a paper towel
Pro Tip
If your avocado does turn a little brown on the surface, just scrape off the top layer with a knife. The flesh underneath will still be green and fresh.
